A Note From Us
Sometimes hearing loss shows up where you least expect it.
Lately, we’ve been experiencing it right at home with Ellie, our sweet geriatric dog. As she has gotten older, her hearing has declined significantly. We can call her name from only a few feet away and she may have no idea we’re there. Sometimes she startles when we approach because she never heard us coming, while other times she sleeps peacefully through noises that once would have had her up and running.
Watching Ellie adapt has been a surprisingly meaningful reminder of how much hearing helps us understand what is happening around us. She now depends much more on seeing us, feeling vibrations, and watching our movements—and we’ve adapted right along with her.
Dogs are incredibly adaptable, and thankfully, so are families. We’ve simply learned new ways to get Ellie’s attention, communicate with her, and make sure she still feels safe, included, and loved.
It’s also a reminder that communication isn’t always about making something louder. Sometimes it means changing how we connect.
Helping people stay connected to the people, conversations, and moments that matter is at the heart of what we do every day.
When Someone Doesn’t Hear You
Watching Ellie adapt has also reminded us of something we talk about with families all the time: better communication isn’t always about speaking louder.
If someone you love is having difficulty hearing, a few small changes can make conversations much easier:
- Get their attention before you begin speaking.
- Face them so they can see your expressions and visual cues.
- Reduce competing background noise when possible.
- Speak clearly and naturally rather than shouting.
- If something isn’t understood, try rephrasing instead of simply repeating the same words louder.
- Make sure hearing aids are clean, charged, and functioning properly.
And if conversations are becoming more difficult even with hearing aids, let us know. Sometimes a simple adjustment can make a meaningful difference.

Justine’s Tech Corner
When Your Hearing Aids Won’t Connect to Your Phone
Hi everyone, Justine here!
If you use your hearing aids with your smartphone, you may have experienced this: everything was working perfectly yesterday, and suddenly your phone calls aren’t streaming, your hearing aid app won’t connect, or only one hearing aid seems to be communicating with your phone.
The good news is that most of the time, it’s simply a Bluetooth connection issue that can be fixed in just a few minutes.
Try These Four Things First
1. Make sure Bluetooth is turned on.
Open your phone’s Settings and make sure Bluetooth is switched on.
2. Restart your hearing aids.
Rechargeable: Place them in the charger for a few seconds, then remove them.
Battery-operated: Open the battery doors, wait a few seconds, and close them again.
3. Close and reopen your hearing aid app.
Sometimes the app simply needs a fresh start.
4. Restart your phone.
It sounds simple, but turning your phone off and back on can resolve many Bluetooth connection problems.
Still Not Connecting?
Before deleting your hearing aids from your phone or changing several settings, give us a call. Sometimes removing and re-pairing the hearing aids is necessary, but we recommend trying the simple fixes first.
And remember: your hearing aids can still help you hear even when they aren’t connected to your phone. Bluetooth controls streaming and app features, but losing the phone connection does not necessarily mean anything is wrong with the hearing aids themselves.

This Quarter’s Pick: The Calamity Club
I’m always drawn to books with strong characters, a little bit of history, and a story that makes you want to keep turning the pages—and The Calamity Club checked all of those boxes for me.
Set in Mississippi during the Great Depression, the novel brings together a group of women from very different walks of life, each facing her own challenges and trying to find her way forward. There’s friendship, humor, hardship, and plenty of personality along the way.
What I especially enjoyed is that these women are far from perfect. They’re complicated, determined, funny, and incredibly human—which makes it very easy to become wrapped up in their lives.
If you enjoyed The Help, or simply love stories about friendship, resilience, and women finding strength in one another, I think this is a wonderful one to add to your reading list.

If you listen through your phone, your hearing aids may be able to stream the audiobook directly to your ears—a great reason to make sure that Bluetooth connection is working!

Summer 2026
This was the Summer that was,
Seems seasons have bailed,
Our grass remained green,
But the tomatoes failed.
Cucumbers didn’t sprout,
And the lettuce fed deer,
Autumn has come,
I know Spring was here.
Some unknown reason,
This Summer evaded,
Fall’s bearing down,
Ospreys migrated.
Our water’s at risk,
The air has degraded,
I’ll welcome the snow,
Pure whiteness awaited.
René’s Granby Home Improvement Strategy
René’s new house in Granby has kept him busy this summer. When there wasn’t a ladder nearby, he decided to improvise—with his convertible.
Thankfully, his new neighbors spotted the operation and came to the rescue with a proper ladder. A new house, plenty of projects, and already some very helpful neighbors—just what René needed this summer!
A Little Time Back Home
We’ve spent a lot of this summer in Granby working on the new house, so coming home to hydrangeas in bloom and the view out over the Oyster River has felt especially nice.
As much as we love a good project, there’s something about being back home and looking out at the water that reminds us to slow down and enjoy summer a little too.
